Several things are notable about this response. Astute political journalists must know better than to believe the image they cultivate. It is hard to avoid the conclusion that they do know better, that they know they are helping the same-sex marriage advocates win the day while also helping President Obama keep those advocates at arm’s length and maintain his popularity with the wider public.
